Current statistics show that 11.2 million South Africans have less than grade 9 (Standard 7), and a further 3.8 million have no schooling whatsoever. This therefore would mean that an ordinary South African will have a challenge in interpreting, for instance, a bank statement, a pay slip, municipal statement, completing leave forms, and making use of an ATM machine. In addition, this also means that employees will not be as productive as one would expect them to be in the work place, and this is a cause for concern.
There are a number of factors that one can attribute to the revelation above, given our history. However, acquiring literacy and numeracy skills can help towards addressing these inequalities, as adult learners involved in our programmes are exposed not only to reading and writing, but to being in charge, and taking control of their everyday lives through practical and functional activities.
