Current statistics reflect that 4.8 million adults South Africans never went to school resulting into total illiteracy. An additional 4.9 million adults are functionally illiterate, meaning that they left or dropped out of school before grade 7.
There are a number of factors that one can attribute to the revelation above given our history. However acquiring literacy and numeracy skills can help towards addressing the inequalities of the past, as adult learners are exposed not only to reading and writing, but to be in charge and take control of their everyday lives through practical and functional activities.
